What is Thanksgiving Day?

Thanksgiving Day is an Offering Day for the church in Papua New Guinea. It occurs on June 28th 2009, amongst all the local assemblies throughout the entire nation of PNG; and is a day when each member will give an offering in thankfulness to God, to be directed toward the evangelisation of Papua New Guinea and its nearby neighbour nations.

Background

For many years, the church has depended solely on financial support from overseas to accomplish its plans and goals. This year, however, the church in Papua New Guinea will embark on a new path. A spirit of giving has swept through the nation, and God has laid it upon the hearts of the local PNG saints to organise a “Thanksgiving Day” – a day where they think about the goodness of the Lord, and give an offering to help the work of the church go ahead.

Every member in Papua New Guinea will come together to give on this nation-wide offering day; adults, youth and children. This Thanksgiving Day offering will then be used to fund the running of the church in PNG and assist in the development of our Bible School complex. There is much excitement among the church membership about June 28th. They feel honoured to support the work of the church, and a sense of responsibility toward their country, church and world.

It's Time to Go Forward

The theme from our 2008 Conference was “It’s time to go forward” taken from Exodus 14:15, and truly the church has made progress since that time. We have introduced a new Constitution, mainly because our Departments are now starting to develop and reach new heights. We have been able to acquire more land for the Bible School, which means our vision of establishing a major training centre in PNG can be realised. And we have revamped the Missions Department, making the World Missions Department a department with purpose and goals. And we have, for the first time, sent a missions team to a neighbouring country in an international missions outreach.

The Biggest Need of all

The General Board of PNG recognises that the biggest need is the Bible School, and has made this the primary goal of the Organisation. Currently, the Bible School is still in its infant stage, and in no way able to handle the large challenge that Papua New Guinea presents. Bible School is the one thing that will bring blessing and revival to all parts of PNG, and will be the focus for us in the immediate future. We already have the land – we just need the buildings: teachers’ residences, classrooms, dormitories, dining facilities and much more.

Invitation

We would like to invite you to join with the precious saints of Papua New Guinea on June 28th as they give in one accord to help the church in PNG go ahead. This offering will mainly be directed toward the development of the Bible School, with a portion directed to the Mission Department to assist in our evangelisation efforts.

The church in PNG has taken the burden of the work in their country into their own hearts and minds, and are ready to give. But with 95% of the population not in paid employment, and 85% earning less than US$2 per day, PNG needs your help in reaching their goals and visions for the Bible School and Church.

Bible School Land 1
We have been able to acquire more land for the Bible School - We just need buildings!
We are temporarily using it for farming to generate income to help in the construction of the School and its facilities.
Bible School Land 2
This piece (as well as the top picture above), also adjoins the existing Bible School building, and opens up some very exciting prospects to the future of Bible School in Papua New Guinea!
